ALLEMAN —áThe Class 2A seventh-ranked PCM wrestling team crowned six champions and advanced eight to the next round, but Van Meter/Earlham’s consistency at the top of each weight class pushed the Mustangs to the runner-up position for the second straight season.

PCM had six champions, two runner-ups and one third-place finisher, but Van Meter/Earlham won the 2A Sectional 11 title with five champs, three second-place finishes and five thirds on Feb. 3 at North Polk High School.

The Bulldogs scored 250 points in the top spot. The Mustangs scored 235.5 points in the second position.

Both teams advanced to the Feb. 6 regional duals. The Mustangs hosted a four-team bracket in Monroe.

PCM wrestled Red Oak in the semifinals and the winner faced either Williamsburg or Creston/Orient-Macksburg in the championship round.

Senior Chase Shirk (126) and juniors Wes Cummings (160) and Lucas Roland (170) all won titles in their weight classes after each recorded a pair of pins on the day.

Sophomore Payton Drake (126), freshman Colby Tool (138), junior Jarron Trausch (182) also won titles, while freshman Landon Fenton (106) and senior Noah Anderson (195) both advanced to districts after placing second.

The top two finishers at sectionals advance to the district round.

PCM’s eight wrestlers continue their trek toward the state meet in the district tournament at noon on Feb. 10 in Knoxville.

Second-ranked Cummings (42-2) spent 69 seconds on the mat in all. He had pins of 23 and 46 seconds.

Second-ranked Roland improved to 41-1, while Shirk is now 26-8.

Trausch (39-4) won both of his matches by major decision. He won a sectional title after defeating Saydel’s Trevor Sprague 13-4 in the championship match.

Sixth-ranked Drake (37-3) reached the 113-pound final following a technical fall in his semifinal match. In the finals, Drake defeated eighth-ranked Colby Wiederholt (40-4) of Van Meter/Earlham 6-4 in overtime.

Tool returned from an injury with a 2-0 at 138. He improved to 30-7 on the season with a pin and a 4-2 decision.

Fenton (35-7) entered the tournament as the two seed at 106. He went 1-1 on the day, winning by fall and losing to fifth-ranked Colby Lillegard of Bondurant-Farrar by fall in the championship match.

The final qualifier was Anderson (16-10). He was the four seed at 195 pounds but went 3-1 on the day with three pins, including pins over the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.

Senior Jacob Ponder finished third at 220, while seniors Caleb Peter (120) and Drew Johnson (152), junior Cody Wallace (145) and sophomore Jace Smith (285) were all fourth. Junior Clay VanWyk (132) finished fifth.

Finishing behind PCM in third was Chariton with 157 points. North Polk (139.5), Bondurant-Farrar (135.5) and Saydel (118) rounded out the field.
