Newton AD Scott Garvis leaving for Ankeny Centennial post

After directing Newton High School athletics and activities the past six years, Scott Garvis announced Monday he was stepping down at the end of the school year. He has accepted another position.

Following Monday night’s Ankeny Community School District board meeting, Garvis was named the Ankeny Centennial High School activities and athletic director.

Garvis has been the NHS athletic director since August 2013.

“I want to thank Newton Community School for the opportunity to lead Cardinal Activities and Athletics over the last six years,” Garvis said in a statement released by the Newton Community School District.

“The Newton community has embraced my family with open arms, and we have forged relationships that will last forever. I want to extend my most heartfelt thank you to every student, past and present, the talented teachers, coaches, directors, sponsors, and staff ... Most importantly, I feel very fortunate to have played a small part in the great tradition of Newton High School. I am very proud of our accomplishments over the past six years. It was truly a team effort. I wish the Cardinal Nation nothing but the best. The Red and Black will always have a special place in my heart.”

Garvis grew up about 70 miles north of Newton near Eldora, where he went to Eldora-New Providence High School.

He earned a bachelor’s degree at Westmar University in Le Mars and has masters’ degrees from Drake University and United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala.

Garvis has worked in three Iowa school districts. Garvis has been district director of athletics in Minnesota school district and in a district in the Seattle, Wash., area.
