City to launch $8K ‘Get to Grow Newton’ ad campaign

The City of Newton will spend more than $8,000 on a new advertising campaign called “Get to Grow Newton,” which will include radio and online promotions throughout the year.

City council recently approved the agreement with Alpha Media LLC, the parent company of KCOB and Energy 106.7 radio stations. The market area includes Newton, Marshalltown, Grinnell and Tama.

“This package will provide the staff (the ability) to promote the brand, tout economic development and promote special events,” city administrator Matt Muckler said. “The Newton Community Marketing Board has had a discussion on the importance of advertising locally, as well as regionally, so that community members are informed about events, initiatives and other important brand messaging.”

The package includes 30-second commercials on air and streamed online as well as 30-second radio commercials. It also includes a banner ad on the company website for Newton Fest and Bowlful of Blues.

Sponsorships through the package include 30-second commercials during each Proud to Know Newton program, a 30-second commercial during each Newton Cardinal football and basketball broadcast and a 30-second commercial in every game in 2018 for the St. Louis Cardinal baseball broadcasts. City staff will also be able to do interviews on the stations morning radio program, The Morning Jolt with Jamie and Sarah, on Energy 106.7.

The total commitment for the advertising package is $8,112 and will be split between the fiscal year 2017-2018 and fiscal year 2018-2019 budgets evenly. The funds will be paid from the community marketing budget.

Radio advertising is one of four areas the city is currently using to promote Newton. To date, in FY17-18 the city has spent $4,125 in television advertising, $8,312 in radio advertising, $16,232 in print advertising and $1,820 on social media.

“The ads have promoted signature Newton events through event-based marketing, shopping local, attractions and the community as a whole,” community marketing manager Danielle Rogers said.
