Undefeated Warhawk girls beat Hawks; Hawk boys cruise

SULLY —Lynnville-Sully’s girls were in charge at home Friday in South Iowa Cedar League action against Class 1A third-ranked North Mahaska. The Hawks pushed out to a 28-20 halftime lead.

The Warhawks remained undefeated with a 32-8 run in the third quarter against the Hawks. North Mahaska (13-0, 16-0) claimed a 69-57 victory. The Hawk girls dropped to 7-5 in SICL play and 10-5 overall.

“Obviously, the third quarter was the difference in the game. We cannot give up 32 points and expect to be in the game,” Hawk head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “The first half might be as good as we had played all year, didn’t rebound the ball very well but we played good defense and offense.”

Lynnville-Sully’s 1A sixth-ranked Hawks took care of business in front of the home crowd Friday. They led visiting North Mahaska, 25-7, after the first quarter of play and cruised to a 68-31 South Iowa Cedar League win.

“We got off to a good start in the first quarter. When the guys bring the energy on the defensive end, good things happen for this group,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “Hopefully we can continue to take care of the basketball and share the basketball on the offensive end.”

The Hawk girls shot 42 percent, 20-of-47, from the field and cashed in on 16-of-27 free throw attempts. They out-rebounded the Warhawks 37-21 but turned ball over 245 times.

North Mahaska drained nine 3-pointers in the game. It shot 48 percent, 22-of-45, from the field and matched the Hawks at the foul line, hitting 16-of-28 tries. The Warhawks had 17 turnovers.

Mariah Vos led the Hawks with 21 points, six steals and six rebounds. Shiloh Cunningham added 11 points and pulled six rebounds. Camryn Russell dished out four assists and scored seven points.

Krystal Van Dyke tossed in six points and cleared 10 rebounds. Jataya Meyer and Carson Fisk each had five points. Mallory Loftus scored two points.

North Mahaska got 24 points from Paige Layman, who was 5-of-5 from 3-point range. Jade Hay had 18 points and Cheyenne Shaw scored 13 points.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys stayed perfect — 12-0 — in SICL play and is 12-3 overall.

The Hawks enjoyed a 37-15 halftime advantage. They outscored the Warhawks 19-8 in the third period and 12-8 in the fourth quarter.

Shooting 52 percent, 29-of-56, from the field helped fuel the Hawks’ 12th win of the season. They limited the Warhawks to 29 percent, 12-of-41, shooting from the field. Each team hit three free throws in the game.

Lynnville-Sully held a 37-20 rebounding edge over North Mahaska. The Hawks had 14 assists and 14 steals in the game.

Rylan James poured in 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and made three steals for the Hawks. Brevin Hansen had 11 points and three assists. Tanner Foster scored 10 points and had five rebounds.

Jesse Van Wyk claimed seven rebounds while adding nine points to the Hawks’ score. Tyson Vander Linden had seven points and three assists.

Bray Noun Harder had six points and Grant Wehrle had four points. Scoring three points apiece were Gage Vander Leest and Blaize Kuhlmann.

Ben Sherburne fired in nine points and Blake Readshare had seven points for North Mahaska (1-12).

Lynnville-Sully’s teams play in SICL action on Tuesday at Colfax-Mingo.

The girls’ game tips off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys’ game at 7:30 p.m. in Colfax.
