Tigerhawks place third at home tournament

COLFAX — A short-handed roster prevented the Colfax-Mingo wrestling team from going undefeated in its home dual tournament on Saturday.

The Tigerhawks were still impressive in finishing their day in third place.

Seniors Colton Lourens (285) and Chance Rice (160), juniors Cauy Fitch (120), Damir Gumerov (182) and Skyler Aikin (220) and sophomore Zack Barnes (113) all went 5-0 on the day to lead Colfax-Mingo.

The Tigerhawks started the day with a 57-18 win over South Iowa Cedar League foe HLV. The only loss came in their second pool-play match against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

Colfax-Mingo finished pool action with a 54-27 win over Des Moines North-Hoover and a 52-18 victory over the Newton JV. The Tigerhawks finished third after defeating Treynor 51-26.

Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln defeated Colfax-Mingo, 38-37, and the Tigerhawks (29-3) gave up 18 points in forfeits.

Each match started at 106. Each team wrestled four matches in pool action. The fifth and final match came against the team which placed in the same position on the other side of the bracket.

Pool A included Colfax-Mingo, Newton JV, HLV, Des Moines North-Hoover and Council Bluffs Lincoln. Pool B featured Lynnville-Sully, Knoxville, North Mahaska, Treynor and Ankeny Centennial JV.

Knoxville won the team championship with a 45-28 win over Council Bluffs Lincoln.

Class 1A No. 6 Rice (34-2) recorded three pins and took two forfeits on the day at 160.

Seventh-ranked Fitch (37-3) recorded two pins, took two forfeits and won a 6-1 decision at 120. Fitch is now at 97 career victories.

Lourens, who is ranked ninth, won two of his matches by fall, took a pair of forfeits and claimed a 9-1 major decision at 285. He is now 35-3 on the season.

Gumerov (22-7) had three pins and grabbed two forfeits at 182.

Barnes improved to 24-4 at 113 following one pin, one forfeit and three decisions.

Senior Nick Barnes and sophomore Trystin Ross each went 4-1 on the day. Nick Barnes (28-9) had two pins and two forfeits, and Ross scored two pins, one forfeit and one decision.

Sophomore Cyden Fitch (30-9) won three of his five matches. Two of those wins came by pin and the other by forfeit.

Colfax-Mingo wrestles in a quadrangular hosted by English Valleys at 6 p.m. Tuesday in North English.
