SULLY — Three of the four Lynnville-Sully senior wrestlers went out the way seniors want to on Senior Night — winning.

Cayden Johnson let out a roar after pinning Colfax-Mingo’s sophomore Trystin Ross. Johnson had the lead in the 152-pound match, but he admitted getting the pin at the 4:24 mark felt really good for his 100th career victory.

“It feels so good to get my 100th, especially with my grandpa sitting over there in the corner. It’s a great feeling,” Johnson said. “Wow, to get it on Senior Night against Colfax-Mingo, a big rival. I got a good half in and ran it pretty hard. I got him turned over and I wasn’t going to let that go.”

Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks hosted a quadrangular wrestling meet Thursday for Senior Night. The Hawks did not win a dual in the meet Johnson, Carson Dunsbergen, Josh Dunsbergen and Sage Zylstra and their parents were recognized after the first dual.

Johnson, Carson Dunsbergen and Josh Dunsbergen each went 3-0 in the final home meet of their four-year career. Zylstra, who sits on 99 match wins, was still sidelined with an injury. Josh Dunsbergen reached the 99-win mark Thursday and Carson Dunsbergen is at 95 wins.

Colfax-Mingo’s Tigerhawks came into Thursday’s action with their own milestone opportunity. With the 59-24 win over Lynnville-Sully to begin the night’s action, the Tigerhawks established a new dual win record. Colfax-Mingo had won a program-high 23 duals in 2016-17.

The win over Lynnville-Sully was No. 24. The Tigerhawks had not lost a dual since the opening night of the season. Centerville, ranked No. 9 in Class 2A, beat Colfax-Mingo, 55-21. The Tigerhawks bounced right back for a 49-21 win over English Valleys.

Colfax-Mingo is at 25-2 and counting. It’s two losses have been to 2A squads — Centerville and Woodward-Granger.

“The kids are buying in to what we’re doing, believing what we’re telling them and working hard,” Colfax-Mingo head coach Erin Hume said about the new duals record. “They’ve earned it this year. We’ve got 10 more duals this season so this group can really set the standard high for our program.”

Johnson has been wrestling for 13 years. He said he really hadn’t thought much of 100 wins in high school.

“I never really did until this year. Someone mentioned it, and I realized I was close. It’s pretty cool,” Johnson said. “The match didn’t start out well. I gave up a penalty point but after that I was feeling pretty good. I got winded at the end but got the job done.”

Johnson moved to 19-16 for the season after getting a forfeit in against English Valleys and pinning Centerville’s Bob Wiskus in 15 seconds. English Valleys beat Lynnville-Sully 48-24 and Centerville took a 60-24 decision over the Hawks. Centerville also beat English Valleys, 58-21.

Josh Dunsbergen began the night with forfeit wins against the Tigerhawks and English Valleys at 138 pounds. He finally got on the mat against Centerville. He pinned Centerville’s Matt Logsdon in 1:14. Josh Dunsbergen pushed his season mark to 25-1.

Carson Dunsbergen nailed down a victory at 145 pounds against Colfax-Mingo, pinning senior Nathan Evans right at the end of the second period. He took a forfeit against English Valleys then made quick work of Centerville’s Nolan Bogle, pinning him in 35 seconds. Carson Dunsbergen is 16-9 on the season.

Zylstra said he hopes to be able to rejoin the team in competition this weekend at the Colfax-Mingo Duals Tournament. He said he injured his shoulder during the Prairie City-Monroe tournament on Jan. 6.

“It was a good Senior Night. The four seniors have put in hard work for four years,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Jason Walston said. “We’ll have four kids going out of the program with 400 wins, which is big. That’s a lot of hard work on the mat and shows their dedication to the sport.”

Freshman Lane Mathis went 3-0 with two wins at 160 and one at 170 for Lynnville-Sully. Freshman CJ Snethen was 0-3 wrestling at 126 and 120. Ben Van Wyk, a junior, was 0-1 at 120.

“We wrestled really well tonight. The last couple of weeks we’ve stepped it up — pushing the pace more and wrestling with confidence,” Walston said. “We’re building toward peaking at the right time for sectionals and districts.”

After beating Lynnville-Sully, the Tigerhawks moved on to challenge Centerville’s Big Red. The Tigerhawks had a 9-6 lead with an 8-4 decision by Nick Barnes at 195 to open the dual and a 47-second pin by 1A ninth-ranked Colton Lourens at 285.

Centerville took over from there winning seven straight matches. Josh Smith broke the string with a pin of Big Red’s Bob Wiskus at 152. At 170 pounds, Colfax-Mingo’s Xavier Anderson won by a fall as the final win of the dual for the Tigerhawks.

“We showed up and wrestled a tough Centerville team. Overall, tonight went fine but you could tell we hadn’t wrestled since last Tuesday. We were a little flat and have some things to work on,” Hume said. “It’s better to find those out now than later on. We’ll keep going.”

Lourens was the lone Tigerhawk to go 3-0 on the night. Nick Barnes, Anderson, Smith (160, 152), Damir Gumerov (182), Zack Barnes (113), Cauy Fitch (120), Cyden Fitch (126) each posted 2-1 marks. Ilia Hosetter got to wins by forfeit at 132. Noah Stromeyer (106), Nathan Evans (145), Trystin Ross (152, 160) and Skyler Aikin (220) had 1-2 nights.

Colfax-Mingo was without 1A sixth-ranked Chance Rice at 160 because of illness.
