PCM splits two with Gilbert

MONROE — The Prairie City-Monroe boys’ basketball team remained in the title hunt in the Heart of Iowa Conference Tuesday night after a 77-72 win over Class 3A Gilbert.

Junior Reed Worth led a trio of Mustangs in double-figures with 21 points and he added four assists. Junior Andrew Van Ryswyk tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds and senior Jackson Thomas chipped in 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.

PCM’s starters accounted for 70 of the team’s 77 points as seniors Elijah Sperfslage and Noah Lanphier both scored eight. Lanphier grabbed eight boards and Sperfslage tallied five rebounds and a team-high six assists.

PCM led 23-16 after one, but Gilbert (5-7 overall, 4-5 in the HOIC) took a lead into the fourth with a 25-15 advantage in the third quarter. The Mustangs (11-3, 8-1) won the fourth by 10.

GIRLS

Gilbert 59, PCM 58

Sophomore Regan Freland finished with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals, but her efforts were not quite good enough in a 59-58 loss to Gilbert on Tuesday.

The Mustangs (5-10, 3-6) rallied to take a narrow lead in the fourth despite being down by 13 points in the second half. PCM went to the free-throw line down by a point with .3 seconds to play but missed both free throws.

Junior Camryn Wignall finished with 13 points, five assists and two steals and freshman Emma George tallied nine points in the loss.
