Newton JV wrestlers compete in Trojan Duals

PLEASANTVILLE — Six Newton High junior varsity wrestlers competed in Saturday’s Pleasantville Trojan Dual Tournament. The Cardinal junior varsity went 0-4 in dual action.

Newton lost 29-21 to Montezuma and dropped a 54-21 decision to Ogden. Pella defeated Newton’s junior varsity 54-9. Host Pleasantville beat Newton 42-21.

Junior Blake Cockerton posted a 4-0 mark for the day wrestling at 126 pounds for Newton. He pinned Ogden’s Avery McCloud in 2 minutes, 29 seconds and posted a 9-7 decision over Pella’s Ryan Van Donselaar. He had two wins by forfeits.

Thomas Cox, another junior, was 3-1 at 182. He posted a 3-1 win over Montezuma’s Weston Shirk, a 3-0 decision against Ogden’s Denver Hoskins and a 6-1 win over Pleasantville’s Kelly Sautter. He was pinned by Pella’s Scott Chaffin.

At 120 pounds, sophomore James Beck was 2-2 with his two wins coming on forfeits. Freshman William Muckler wrestled at 195 with a 1-3 mark for the day with his lone win coming by forfeit.

Two Newton wrestlers each competed in two different weight classes during the day’s action.

Sophomore Gabe Hoen was 2-1 at 220 with a forfeit win and a pin of Pleasantville’s Matthew Kauffman. At 285, Hoen pinned Pella’s Alex Shafer.

Junior Colby Jones went 1-1 at 145 pounds winning on an injury default by Montezuma’s Brett Maschmann. He was 0-2 at 138 pounds.

Newton’s junior varsity and varsity competes in Little Hawkeye Conference dual action on Thursday at Grinnell. Junior varsity matches start at 6 p.m. Junior varsity wrestlers from Newton are slated to wrestle at the Colfax-Mingo varsity tournament Saturday in Colfax.
