Newton girls lose to PC, 3A No. 6 Nevada

It was a back-to-back game weekend for Newton High’s Cardinal girls.

On Friday night, the Cardinals lost 60-38 to Pella Christian in Pella.

They turned around to host Class 3A No. 6 Nevada on Saturday, falling 77-44.

Newton is 3-10 overall. This week doesn’t get any easier for the Cardinals as they go to 4A No. 6 Boone on Tuesday in a non-conference contest.

Then Newton hosts 5A 11th-ranked Indianola on Friday in Little Hawkeye Conference play. With Friday’s loss, the Cardinals finished the first round of LHC action at 1-6.

At Pella Christian on Friday, two free throws by senior Addy Blom tied the game at 16-all late in the first quarter.

Unfortunately for Newton, the Cardinals failed to score again for 13 minutes of game time.

During the span from late in the first quarter to the almost halfway through the third quarter, host Pella Christian had a 26-0 run on its way to a 60-38 win.

Newton did not score in the second quarter as the Eagles rolled to a 38-16 halftime advantage.

A fastbreak basket by senior Marcelina Marvelli broke the scoring drought for Newton — 44-18. The Cardinals went on a 16-4 run to make it 48-32 at the end of the third quarter. They went into a the deep freeze again with just six points in the fourth quarter.

Marvelli led the Cardinals with 15 points. She hit three 3-pointers. Newton was 4-of-12 from 3-point range. The Cardinals shot 36.5 percent, 15-of-41, from the field overall. They had 19 turnovers.

Marvelli and senior Ali Bestell each cleared five rebounds. Senior Randi Walters had three assists.

Pella Christian was led by Morgan Fopma with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Isabella Baugh added 13 points.

Against Nevada, Walters broke out with 23 points, hitting five 3-pointers for the Cardinals. No other Newton player scored in double figures.

Nevada’s 6-foot-2 inch senior Lexy Koudelka, who is the second leading scorer in 3A, had a school-record day for the Cubs. She tossed in a season-high 44 points and cleared 25 rebounds.

The Cubs staked out an 18-8 first-quarter lead then doubled up on the Cardinals (30-15) in the second period. Nevada led 48-23 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Cubs outscored the Cardinals 18-14. Nevada finished the game on an 11-7 scoring edge in the fourth period.

Newton shot 27 percent, 15-of-56, from the field. The Cardinals had nine 3-pointers. They went 5-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Marvelli hit three treys and dished out six assists. Walters, junior Rachel Rhoads and freshman Meg Callaghan each had five rebounds.

The Cubs were 30-of-62, 48 percent, from the field and cashed in on 13-of-20 free throw attempts. Addy Vorm scored 13 points and Riley Mailey had a season-high 20 steals.
