After high school, Del attended Iowa State University for two years, prior to serving his country in the U.S. Army. Upon his return, Del began his 30-year career as a welder at John Deere in Ankeny. On Sept. 12, 1965, Del was united in marriage with Carolyn Mundell in Altoona. They made their home in Ankeny, until the early 1970s when they moved to rural Newton. Del enjoyed farming, hunting and especially fishing.
