Newton man leads police on pursuit

A Newton man who led police on a pursuit Thursday afternoon was wanted for escaping from Fort Des Moines Correctional Facility.

Jeremy Jones, 25, fled from a Newton police officer and led them on a vehicle and foot pursuit before his arrest.

Police spotted Jones around noon driving a Ford Ranger pickup in northwest Newton. The officer tried to stop Jones, and he fled out of town — driving on Highway F36 and eventually stopped South of Highway F17 on West 100th Street North, according to law enforcement.

Jones reportedly ran on foot from the vehicle into a wooded area. He was later arrested without incident.

Law enforcement officers from several agencies assisted in locating Jones, including the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DOT and the Baxter Police Department.

Jones had outstanding arrest warrants for escape from Fort Des Moines Correctional Facility. He was also charged with eluding, interference with official acts and several traffic violations.
