OSCEOLA — Starting the new year out right were Newton High’s bowling teams. The Cardinal squads knocked down more pins than their hosts, the Clarke Indian teams, in Thursday’s dual meet at Alley Bowl.

Newton’s varsity girls held a 132-pin lead over the Lady Indians after the individual games. The Cardinal girls rolled up a strong Baker Games score — 816 — to beat Clarke, 2,321-2,045.

The Cardinal boys were up by just 74 pins heading into the Baker Games. Newton got past the Indians with a 992-pin Baker Games score to Clarke’s 843 pins. It pushed the Newton boys to a 2,844-2,621 victory.

“Our boys were determined to do well against the undefeated Clarke team. It was exciting to see the varsity boys bowl three out of the five Baker Games in the 200s with an average in that portion up from 170 pins to 198 pins,” Newton High head bowling coach Christie Hughes said.

Seniors Austin Johansen and Shaiden Simmons led the Newton boys’ varsity. Johansen was the lone Newton bowler with two 200-plus pin games for his 413 (202-211). Simmons posted a 399 with games of 175 and 224.

The best single game score of the dual for Newton was a 234 by junior Cutter Benac, who finished with a 381 series. Sophomore Alex Frymoyer had a 353 (188-165) and Nate Keith, another sophomore, bowled a 306 (148-158). Senior Reece Thurmond had a 301 (158-143).

“The girls’ varsity team worked together well tonight,” Hughes said. “We were excited to see their Baker Game average at 163 pins.”
