Newton Police Department

• Karen L. Christy, 48, of Newton, was charged with domestic assault and possession of drug paraphernalia and Jerad M. McGinley, 33, of Newton, was arrested on a Johnston Police Department warrant for first-degree, second-degree and third-degree theft at 5:31 p.m. Dec. 29 after police were called to a residence on East 18th Street North in reference to a domestic fight. Police spoke with McGinley who said Christy was very intoxicated and struck him in the face. Christy denied striking McGinley and she told police McGinley punched her in the left ear and the nose. Police found a metal pipe beside her bed. She told police the pipe belonged to McGinley. Christy and McGinley were arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Levi A. Lear, 28, of Newton, was charged with driving while barred at 10:54 p.m. Dec. 29 after police pulled over a maroon Chevrolet Blazer driving recklessly at the intersection of South Third Avenue West and West Second Street South. The driver pulled into a parking lot in the 400 block of West Fourth Street South. The driver, Lear, didn’t have a license and was barred for habitual violator. He was released and issued a citation to appear in court.

• Summer R. Goodwin, 36, of Newton, was charged with public intoxication at 1:22 a.m. Jan. 1 after police were called to 315 First Ave. W. in reference to a fight. Police identified Goodwin standing in the entrance of the building. She had bloodshot, watery eyes, poor balance and smelled of alcohol. She refused a breath test and told police she was intoxicated. She was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Carolyn R. Merrigan, 54, of Newton, was charged with driving while barred at 4:18 a.m. Jan. 2 after police saw a vehicle with high beams driving in an opposite lane. The driver also didn’t stop at a stop sign at the intersection of North Eighth Avenue East and East Seventh Street North. The driver pulled over and was found to be barred. She was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
