Lela M. Young, 93, of Newton, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, at Accura Healthcare of Newton West. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday. Memorials to Lela’s family maybe left at the funeral home.
Lela, the daughter of Thomas and Morning Evadella (Gibson) Simpson, was born June 6, 1924, in Mount Pisgah, Ky. At the age of 7, her family arrived by train in Kellogg. Lela would continue to live in the Kellogg and Newton areas for most of her life. In December of 1953, Lela was united in marriage with Gerald Young. She worked at the Maytag Company and later at the Vernon Company, where she retired from. Lela enjoyed crocheting, flower gardening, embroidery work, metal detecting and mushroom hunting. She also loved going to garage sales, country music and her cat, Shilo.
Those left to honor Lela’s memory are her daughter, Linda (Stan) Moan of Allenton, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Debbie Young of Des Moines; grandchildren, Andrew (Nadine) West, Julie (Mark) Sampson, Matthew (Angela) Young, Crystal Young, Kalo Young, Levi Young and Mariah Young; 16 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Rose Anderson of Des Moines, Nancy Fuller (fiancé, Russ Russell) of Baxter and Roy Delk of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Simpson and Morning Evadella Delk; husband, Gerald Young; three sons, Kenneth Wayne (Donna) Wiley, Gary Young and Larry Young; and her brothers, Ralph (Jo) Simpson, Pete Simpson, Homer (Gertrude) Simpson, Robert Delk and Clyde (Grace) Delk.
