Doug Cupples was named chair of the Jasper County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday during the first meeting of 2018.
Cupples received the only nomination for the position by supervisor Denny Carpenter and was approved for the position in a 2-1 vote with supervisor Joe Brock opposing.
Carpenter was then nominated by Cupples to continue in the position of vice chair, which he has served for the past year and was approved unanimously. Brock previously served as board chair in 2017 and vice chair in 2016.
Cupples is entering his second year on the board after being elected to the position in 2016.
“I’m excited to do it. I’m a little nervous, I have to learn how to run the meetings,” Cupples said. “I hope we are able to all work together and let 2017 be.”
Toward the end of 2017, Cupples and Brock often clashed about how the county should move forward with issues including the future of the Jasper County Annex building and the location of the Jasper County Health Department. In December, Cupples read a statement during a board meeting accusing Brock of intimidation methods and combative behavior.
