Department

• Melissa A. Hemphill, 36, of Colfax, was arrested at 11:09 a.m. Dec. 27 at the adult probation office on a Polk County warrant for original charges of second-degree criminal mischief and assault on a police officer. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Mary A. Stewart, 54, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 5:06 p.m. Dec. 22 after police were called to Yes Way. The suspect took a family size bag of potato chips without paying for it and left in a white Pontiac. Police stopped the vehicle in the 100 block of East 10th Street South and identified the driver as Stewart. She denied taking the bag of chips and claimed the bag was already in her car. Police confirmed the item was stolen, and she eventually told police she had taken the bag without paying for it. She was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Patti L. Gardner, 57, of Newton, was charged with two counts of fifth-degree theft at 7:17 a.m. Dec. 27 when police were called to Walmart. Gardner was accused by a store employee of stealing craft items and women’s underwear. Later that day, police were called at 9:23 a.m. to a home on South Third Avenue East where the homeowner said a woman showed up at her home and stated she was cold and needed to use the bathroom. The homeowner called police when the woman wouldn’t leave the bathroom. Police found the woman in the basement near the bathroom. She matched the description of the shoplifter at Walmart and had the stolen items with her. The stolen items were a total value of $177. She was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Bryce Nell, 31, of Newton, was arrested at 1:48 a.m. Dec. 30 in 200 block East Eighth Street North on a Newton Police Department warrant for violation of a no contact order. Also arrested at the scene was Churie Congdon, 29, on a Polk County warrant — probation violation, original charge — aggravated theft. Nell was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
