SOLON — After blowing past its first two opponents at the Solon Dual Tournament on Thursday, the Class 2A sixth-ranked Prairie City-Monroe wrestling team squared off against Solon on its home turf.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs, it wasn’t their night as the No. 13 Spartans won 10 of the 14 contested matches and won the dual 42-21.
Before that loss, PCM defeated Vinton-Shellsburg 48-21 and dominated Keokuk 69-12.
Against the Spartans (9-2), PCM couldn’t pull out the close matches. Solon won 10 contested matches, five of which were by three points or less.
The Mustangs (13-3) trailed 16-0 after five matches and never recovered.
The featured match came at 195 where No. 9 Jarron Trausch and No. 7 Mike Hoyle both wrestled up a weight from their normal 182-pound spot.
Trausch, who got his 100th and 101st career wins by forfeits at 182 earlier in the night, lost to Hoyle 8-7 to finish 2-1 on the day. Trausch is now 20-4 on the season.
Also claiming his 100th career win on the night was junior Lucas Roland (21-1). Roland went 3-0 on the night with a pair of pins. His 100th win came against Solon’s Hayes Diersen, who Roland pinned in 29 seconds.
Sophomore Payton Drake (22-2), freshman Landon Fenton (19-4) and junior Wes Cummings (23-2) joined Roland at 3-0 on the night.
Drake won all three of his matches at 113 pounds by first-period pins. Fenton had two pins and one forfeit on the night at 106 and Cummings took a pair of forfeits and defeated Solon’s Jax Flynn 8-2 at 160.
Freshman Brian Nicholson took two forfeits at 120, senior Drew Johnson won once by forfeit and once by a 5-0 decision at 152 and sophomore heavyweight Jace Smith claimed a win by fall and a win by forfeit.
