Joan June Hart, 82, of Polk City, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Polk City United Methodist Church, 1421 W. Broadway in Polk City. Memorials to Hospice of Central Iowa may be left at the church the day of the service. The Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton is handling the cremation.

Joan, the daughter of Ivan and Colene (Southern) Hinshaw, was born Feb. 11, 1935, in Newton. She grew up in Newton, and graduated from Newton High School in 1953. Joan was united in marriage to William “Bill” Hart June 14, 1953, in Newton. She worked as an office assistant for Super Valu. Bill and Joan lived in Polk City for many years. Joan was a member of the Polk City United Methodist Church and Friends of the Polk City Library. Joan liked knitting reading, feeding birds and working in her yard and garden. She also enjoyed her monthly lunches with her Newton Class of 1953.

Joan is survived by her sister, Peggy Milburn of Whittier, Calif.; two nieces, Barbara (Jon) Strayer of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Brenda (David) Alban of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; three great-nieces; two great-nephews; her two great-great-nephews; and numerous honorary grandchildren. Joan is preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Bill.
