Mustangs end skid against Greene County

JEFFERSON — Sophomore Regan Freland got the Mustangs out to a hot start and then junior Camryn Wignall made sure the Mustangs ended a two-game losing streak with a 59-46 win over Greene County Dec. 8.

Freland scored 16 of her season-high 29 points in the first half. Wignall buried three 3-pointers and scored a career-high 16 points. Wignall came into the game averaging 7.9 points per game.

Freland scored nine of the Mustangs’ first 11 points to give PCM an early 11-2 advantage. She hit 16 at halftime, and PCM led 35-26.

“Regan was able to get to the basket tonight,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said. “The fast start was important. We needed that after two tough losses.”

Wignall hit her third 3-pointer to give PCM its largest lead of the game at 55-41 with 2:22 to play.

“She’s capable of that,” Lindsay said. “She took a big step tonight. She took it to the basket more, and is starting to get more and more comfortable with her knee. She is getting her confidence back. We got over a big hurdle, too.”

PCM improved to 3-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. Greene County’s two-game win streak was snapped as the Rams fell to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in HOIC play.

Freland added seven assists, six rebounds and three steals to her 29 points. Wignall chipped in five steals, freshman Lilli Baird scored seven points and dished out five assists and junior Morgan Uhlenhopp pulled down 12 rebounds. Sophomore Kate McCarthy grabbed four boards.

“Our defense is starting to pick up, and we are starting to understand what we are supposed to do,” Lindsay said. “The girls are starting to turn the corner.”

PCM played at 3A No. 8 Nevada on Dec. 12. The Mustangs host South Hamilton at 6 p.m. on Dec. 15.

Roland-Story 54, PCM 36

PCM’s struggles on the offensive end resulted in a 54-36 loss. The Mustangs trailed 29-16 at halftime.

Freland scored 18 points, had three steals and dished out two assists, but she was the only Mustang in double figures.

Freshman Emma George grabbed a career-high six rebounds and had two assists, Uhlenhopp collected three boards and dished out three assists.
