Lynnville-Sully teams sweep SICL twin bill against HLV

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawk basketball teams rolled to wins at home against HLV in South Iowa Cedar League conference play Friday.

The Hawk girls were up 32-10 at halftime over HLV on their way to a 50-22 win. In the boys’ contest, the Hawks dominated, leading 32-11 after one quarter with the Hawks winning 86-35.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls shot 31 percent, 20-of-64, from the field and went 5-of-11 at the free-throw line. HLV was held to 21 percent, 10-of-46, from the field and hit 2-of-5 at the line.

“I thought our defensive ball pressure was good tonight but then we didn’t rebound the ball as well as we have been,” Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We caused a lot of chaos on defensive end but then carried it over to the offensive end. We didn’t settle into a good offensive rhythm.”

Lynnville-Sully had 15 steals and 23 turnovers in the game. The Hawk girls had a 51-36 edge in rebounding. The Warrior girls committed 33 turnovers.

The Hawk girls had a balanced scoring attack with five players with six or more points. Jataya Meyer and Mallory Loftus each scored nine points and Carson Fisk had eight points. Shiloh Cunningham added seven points and Camryn Russell had six points.

Krystal Van Dyke and Janelle Rozendaal each had four points. Mariah Vos tossed in three points and collected 10 rebounds. Fisk had eight rebounds.

Meyer had four steals and Russell dished out five assists. Van Dyke made five steals and blocked three shots.

Emme Cheney had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the HLV girls.

The Lynnville-Sully boys put together four solid quarters of basketball at both ends of the court against the HLV Warriors. They led HLV 54-21 at halftime.

Lynnville-Sully had 21 assists in the game and 19 steals. The Hawks shot 49 percent, 32-of-65, from the field. They held the Warriors to 36 percent shooting from the field, 15-of-42. HLV had 24 turnovers.

“We did a much better job moving the basketball tonight and it showed in the assist column and on the scoreboard,” Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “The guys were active defensively and on the boards. It was fun to watch everyone get involved and play hard.

Jesse Van Wyk fired in 16 points and had five assists while Brevin Hansen and Tanner Foster each scored 13 points. Foster had five assists and Hansen four assists. Hansen and Gage Vander Leest each had four steals.

Rylan James pulled down eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Drake Ehreshman had six rebounds while Vander Leest and Hansen each had five rebounds.

Tyson Vander Linden scored eight points followed by James with seven and Vander Leest with six. Corey McCoy had four points. Blaize Kuhlmann and Kemper Lukehart each scored three points and Cale Foster had three points.

HLV was led by Mitch Thys with 11 points.

The Hawk squads host BGM in SICL play on Tuesday. The girls’ game tips off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys’ game at 7:30 p.m. in Sully.
