Woman charged, accused of bilking grandparent of inmate

DAVENPORT — A Davenport woman faces felony charges after police say she helped bilk more than $35,000 out of the grandparent of a prison inmate by pretending to be an employee of a law firm representing the inmate.

Audrey Slyter, 30, was arrested Wednesday and charged with theft, ongoing criminal activity and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Police say Slyter and at least two others presented themselves as employees of a law firm earlier this year, telling the inmate’s grandparent that money was needed for attorney’s fees and for the inmate’s medical needs.

Police say Slyter and the others received 20 checks totaling $35,875 from the victim. Police say charges against Slyter’s accomplices are pending.

An attorney for Slyter is not listed in online court records.
