Newton student accepts national award for UI wave tradition

Kaden Kelso’s year just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

On Thursday the 12-year-old Berg Middle School student and cancer survivor helped the University of Iowa football program accepted the Disney Spirit Award, which annually goes to the sport’s most inspirational figure. This year the Iowa Hawkeyes newest tradition — the first quarter wave from fans in Kinnick Stadium to children watching the game from the hospital’s fourth floor — garnered the recognition. Kelso helped kick off as a University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital patient.

The 27th Home Depot College Football Awards aired on national television. The awards ceremony, broadcast from the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Ga., is an opportunity for the nation’s top college football players to be recognized.
