NCMP boys swim past Spencer, lose to Boone

BOONE — NCMP’s Cardinal boys adapted to a change of plans on Thursday. The NCMP swimmers knew they would be facing host Boone in a dual meet, but Spencer was added to the meet.

The Cardinals lost a close dual to Boone, 51-43, for their first dual loss of the season. They beat Spencer 56-38.

“I didn’t even know Spencer was going to be there until mid-afternoon on Thursday,” NCMP head coach Sarah Patterson said. “Not to make excuses, but this was our third meet in six days. I think we saw a bit of fatigue from some of our sprinters.”

Complete results were not given to Patterson to provide to the Newton Daily News by presstime. Patterson did give an overview of the NCMP swims on the night.

Caleb Gaylor won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly races. He also had a 49.88 split swimming on the NCMP 400 freestyle relay.

Patterson said Gaylor is an incredible anchor leg and is super fun to watch.

Patterson said Jacob Nedder is throwing down amazing 50 freestyle relay splits, clocking a 24.02 on the medley leg.

“The first time a 23 flashes up on the scoreboard will be really special. I can’t wait,” Patterson said.

Mitchell Faidley won the junior varsity 100 butterfly and would have placed in the varsity competition. Deklan Lewis posted another personal-best time in the 100 backstroke two meets in a row and clocked a 1:02.11 — almost a full second time drop from Tuesday’s meet.

“Overall, it was a good meet and we continue to see time drops in times in many events and good, courageous swims,” Patterson said. “Areas for improvements are turns when we are tired and breakouts/streamlines. We will start working on that Friday.”

Patterson said all of the NCMP 500 freestyle swimmers had great swims. Adam Hunter won the event, while Henry Jensen posted his best yards time and Devin Lamb and Landon Heisdorffer went 1-2 in the junior varsity 500.

“Landon had a back and forth race with his swimmer from Boone and sprinted right into the wall to out-touch him. The whole team was screaming and yelling. Put it this way — Landon went from a 44.21 split on his second-to-last 50 and laid down a 37.64 on the last 50. He was not going to get beat by this kid from Boone,” Patterson said.

“It was a solid meet for us, and it’s fun to see how much they enjoy each other’s company,” Patterson said. “I want to keep moving forward in a team-oriented manner, but also want to work hard on things we need to improve.”

NCMP travels to Marshalltown on Saturday. Patterson said this invite is a relay meet which is a fun format. Last year the Cardinals placed last at Marshalltown, she said they are hoping to be in the top three this year.

The Marshalltown Invitational gets underway at noon on Saturday.
