Colfax-Mingo cagers sweep HLV

VICTOR — The Colfax-Mingo basketball teams got their first wins of the season on Nov. 28.

The Tigerhawks traveled to HLV and picked up a pair of South Iowa Cedar League victories.

The Tigerhawk boys opened their season with a 61-25 win over the Warriors, while the girls used a big third quarter to dispatch HLV, 63-57.

In the boys’ game, the Tigerhawks led 10-3 after one quarter but outscored the Warriors 18-7 in the second, 16-6 in the third and 17-9 in the fourth to win going away.

Seniors Jarod Nichols and Reegan Van Dyke each had their first double-doubles of the season.

Nichols finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Van Dyke collected 11 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks, three assists and two steals.

The Tigerhawks were 24-of-53 from the floor, shot 53 percent from 2-point range and hit 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Colfax-Mingo (1-0 overall, 1-0 in SICL play) turned it over only 13 times and had 19 assists on its 24 field goals.

Junior Holister Koenig gave the Tigerhawks three in double-figures as he scored 10 points, dished out three assists and grabbed three boards.

Senior Alex Lewis added eight points, eight rebounds and four assists and senior Jonathan Jacobs tallied six points, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals.

HLV fell to 1-1 on the season and 1-1 in the SICL.

In the girls’ game, a 24-9 advantage in the third quarter helped the Tigerhawks (1-1, 1-0) to their first win.

It was 12-10 in favor of the road team and it was tied at 26-all at halftime.

HLV, which fell to 0-3 on the season and 0-3 in SICL play, outscored Colfax-Mingo 22-13 in the fourth to close the gap to single digits.

Junior Payton Rhone buried four 3-pointers and scored 18 points.

Junior Delaney Underwood tallied a career-high 13 points and four assists. Underwood was 8-of-11 from the foul line.

Senior McKeely Tjaden scored 12 points and grabbed six boards, and senior Ries Wilson pulled down seven rebounds and had three steals.

Emma Cheney (15), Maci Boots (14) and Haley Coates (13) all finished in double-figures for the Warriors.

The Tigerhawks played at Lynnville-Sully on Dec. 5.

The two programs stay on the road for a conference varsity doubleheader against BGM starting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 8 in Brooklyn.
