Newton bowlers lose to Bobcats

MARSHALLTOWN — Opening the 2017-18 season on the road Thursday, Newton High’s bowling teams dropped duals against host Marshalltown. The Bobcats had command of the competition at their home bowling lanes, the Wayward Social.

In the boys’ varsity dual, Marshalltown beat Newton 3,365-2,466 and had a bowler, Lucas Kramer roll a perfect 300 game. The Cardinal boys trailed the Bobcats 2,342-1,653 after the individual games.

Newton’s girls trailed Marshalltown by 175 pins — 1,660-1,485 — going into the Baker Games. The Bobcat varsity girls won 2,481-2,194.

“Although Marshalltown proved to be a tough opponent, our teams stayed positive and bowled well for their opening meet. I am proud of how they all did tonight,” Newton head coach Christie Hughes said.

“We congratulate Lucas Kramer of Marshalltown on scoring a perfect game,” Hughes said.

Senior Shaiden Simmons led the Newton varsity boys with a 396 on games of 205 and 191. Michael Hodnett, another senior, rolled a 345 (182-163) and sophomore Carter Vanderschel had a 308 (162-146).

Junior Cutter Benac finished with a 303 (175-128) and senior Austin Johansen had a 301 (134-167). Senior Reece Thurmond had a 277 (119-158). Newton’s Baker Games scores were 153-242, 142, 151 and 125.

It was junior Taylor Johnson bowling a 333 on games of 157 an 177 to lead the Newton varsity girls. Junior Keely Birkenholtz finished with a 301 (146-155) and freshman Abby Price had a 290 (165-125).

Senior Kaytlynn Hughes rolled a 288 (145-143) and junior Alicia Miller had a 273 (140-133). Freshman Tanya Hernandez had a 189 )108-81). Newton’s Baker Games scores were 143, 150, 126, 166 and 124.

Newton’s junior varsity boys lost 2,745-2,100. Devon Young led the way with a 308 (117-191) followed by John Ladewig at 293 (148-145), Eli Ingle at 290 (150-140), Thomas Hodnett at 267 (136-131), Nate Keith at 267 (128-139) and John Ross at 213 (123-90). Baker Games scores were 125, 144, 132, 152 and 122.

In the girls’ junior varsity dual, Marshalltown beat Newton 1,698-1,650. Jenna Miller paced the Cardinals with a 264 (122-142) followed by Mariah Wolfe at 243 (130-113), Chloe Butler at 228 (121-107), Danny Lewis at 223 (114-109), Gabby Pickerell at 195 (49-146) and Harlie Durr at 178 (78-100). Baker Games scores were 83, 101, 99, 117 and 97.

“We are looking forward to our Cardinal Invitational on Saturday against Isaac Newton Christian Academy, Waukee, Knoxville, Pella Christian, and Oskaloosa,” Hughes said.

The Cardinal Invitational begins at 10 a.m. at Cardinal Lanes.
