• Matthew A. Carty, 32, of Newton, was charged with operating while under the influence, first offense after police were called to the 1800 block of South Eighth Avenue East for a vehicle that was hung up on blocks in a church parking lot. Police saw a man sleeping behind the wheel and when asked if he was OK, he said “yes.” When police asked him if he knew where he was, the man identified as Carty, said “Seattle, Wash.” Police smelled a strong odor of alcohol and he had watery, blood shot eyes. Carty said he drove to the church that night and admitted to drinking five beers. Carty failed sobriety tests and blew over .08. He was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Clint T. Nelson, 37, of Newton, was charged with fourth-degree theft and trespassing at 2:49 p.m. Nov. 18 after police were called to Walmart in reference to trespass. When police arrived they found Nelson walking in the parking lot attempting to leave. He was told by police he was not allowed on Walmart property after he had been previously banned last month. Nelson was carrying a six pack of beer, and he told police he took it from the store without paying for it. He also had stolen an Apple TV, a trail camera and a wireless speaker. The total value of theft was $289.
• James L. Beaty, 29, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 7:43 a.m. Nov. 19 after police were called to Git-N-Go in reference to a theft of beer. The clerk told police Beaty came into the store and took a 12 pack of beer and left the store without paying for it. Police spoke to Beaty at his residence and he said he took the beer because he didn’t have any money. The total value was $15.
