Playing in the district with the Class A runner-up, 10 Colfax-Mingo football players were honored on the District 5 teams recently.
Senior Reegan Van Dyke and juniors Zarek Hill and Ahren Teed were all first-team selections, while seniors Jake Dunsbergen and Alex Lewis were second-team choices. Earning honorable mention recognition were senior Colton Lourens, junior Holister Koenig and sophomore Brady Berkey.
Two Tigerhawks were honored with the Golden Award, too. The recipients of the award that goes to deserving players who had their seasons shortened by injury were junior Damir Gumerov and sophomore Trinity Schroeder.
The Class A District 5 teams were released after Hudson lost in the championship game on Thursday.
The Tigerhawks won three more games in 2017 than they did in 2016 and finished district play with a 3-4 record. Hudson won the league at 7-0 followed by Gladbrook-Reinbeck (6-1), Belle Plaine (5-2) and BGM (4-3). North Tama (2-5), Grand View Christian (1-6) and GMG (0-7) were the other three teams in the district.
Van Dyke earned first-team honors as a quarterback, Hill was selected as a defensive back and Teed was honored as an offensive linemen.
Van Dyke led the district with 1,298 passing yards and was second in touchdown passes with 12. He also rushed for 260 yards and five scores.
Overall, Van Dyke threw for 1,694 yards, which ranked third in Class A. He tossed 18 touchdowns and rushed for 404 yards and six scores.
Hill led the district with seven interceptions, had two fumble recoveries, one sack and 40 tackles. He also scored two defensive touchdowns.
Overall, Hill led all of Class A with a school-record eight picks, had 46 tackles, and tied for sixth in Class A with three fumble recoveries.
Teed was the starting center on the Tigerhawks’ offensive line. He helped Colfax-Mingo lead the district in passing yards and the team was fourth in total yards with 1,916. The Tigerhawks scored 161 total points.
Lewis made the second team as a tight end and Dunsbergen was a second-team linebacker.
Dunsbergen led the district in tackles during league games with 56.
Dunsbergen had one pick on the season and finished with 77 1/2 total tackles, which ranked 13th in Class A.
Lewis ranked second in district play with 29 catches and was third in receiving yards with 408 and tied for receiving touchdowns with five. He averaged 14.1 yards per catch.
Lewis hauled in 40 catches for 585 yards overall, which both ranked eighth in Class A. He was seventh in TD catches with seven.
Koenig was an honorable mention linebacker, Lourens earned his honorable mention selection as a defensive lineman and Berkey was an honorable mention kicker.
Lourens finished with 25 1/2 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks in district play. He had 38 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four sacks overall.
Koenig finished with 21 1/2 tackles, four tackles for loss and one sack in district play and claimed 36 tackles, six tackles for loss and one sack overall.
Berkey hit on 13-of-16 PATs and was 1-of-2 in field goals during district play. Overall, Berkey was 23-of-26 in PATs and 2-of-3 in field goals with a long of 37.
