Shop Small Saturday back for fourth year

Shop Small has become an annual tradition aiming to highlight local retail flavors in Newton. Now in its fourth year, Main Street District retailers and restaurants are once again offering retail promotions, coupons and give-a-ways to help encourage community members to shop local after Thanksgiving.

“Holiday shopping is in full swing and Newton Main Street is encouraging you to ‘Shop Small,’” Newton Main Street executive director Graham Sullivan said. “We are looking forward for our community to get out and support our local businesses.”

Following the same format as previous years, customers are able to collect coupons for purchases made at participating businesses between Saturday and Dec. 3. The coupons can be redeemed in the following weeks until Dec. 24 and only at the same store where it was given.

Businesses will have the option of issuing coupons at two different levels: a $5 coupon for every $25 spent, or $1 for every $10 spent. Businesses may place additional restrictions on the coupons.

Along with the shops filled with holiday items and cheer, shoppers will be greeted by custom decorated Christmas trees at each corner of the downtown. Thirteen trees were installed downtown by Randy Ray and were decorated by area businesses and families.

“The Main Street’s design committee came up with the idea as we usually do bunker decorations and we thought this would be a bigger display,” Sullivan said. “Main Street and SSMID partnered on the project.”

Business taking part in the event include Book Trader/Tan America, Bun in the Oven, Choices, Computer Pro, E-Clips Hair and Tanning Salon, The Farmer’s Wife, Fine Things Reclaimed, Forbes Office Solutions, Headlines Hair and Tan Studio, Jan’s Yarn Barn, Mattingly Music & Books, Midtown Cafe, Mr. Dan’s Sandwich Shop, PJ’s Deli, Relics LLC Antiques and Collectibles and Shtuff, Silverado Jewelry, Olive ‘et Boutique and Back Alley Beauty.

“We’re really looking forward to Shop Small Saturday,” Fine Things Reclaimed owner Julie Prendergast said. “People have been great in the area at really supporting the local businesses.”
