Newton beats Perry

Newton High’s Cardinals valued the basketball and every possession on either end of the court on Tuesday night. The Cardinals got off the snide, posting a 61-28 win over visiting Perry.

Senior point guard Randi Walters ripped the nylons for a career-high 31 points for the Cardinals. She netted seven 3-pointers.

“We came out ready to play tonight,” Newton head coach Brandon Sharp said. “The shots fell early for us and we buckled down defensively.”

He said the Cardinals raced out to a 10-2 lead then Perry rallied to within two points, 10-8.

“The girls went to work defensively. We played well defensively, but the thing I was most impressed with is out of our 26 field goals, 21 were assisted,” he said.

“That’s a team sharing the ball,” Sharp said. “We didn’t play selfishly at all tonight.”

It was a 17-13 game at the end of the first quarter. Newton gave up just 11 more points over the final three quarters of play.

The Cardinals pushed to a 30-18 halftime lead. Newton outscored Perry 17-4 in the third quarter and 14-6 in the fourth period.

Walters hit four of her treys in the second half. Senior guard Marcelina Marvelli drilled two 3-pointers on her way to 10 points for Newton.

“Randi shot the ball well tonight. She hit threes but also went to the basket,” Sharp said. “We were pretty consistent in all we did tonight. The girls were doing their jobs on the court which allowed us to be successful.”

The Cardinals attempted only one free throw in the game. Perry went 4-of-13 from the charity stripe.

Newton cleared 29 rebounds in the game led by Walters with six and seniors Addy Blom and Anna Forsyth with four apiece. Marvelli dished out six assists while Forsyth and junior Peyton Maher had five assists apiece.

Walters had four steals and blocked three shots. Blom made two steals. Senior Taylor Ryan had one steal and blocked one shot. Newton had 10 steals and 11 turnovers in the game.

Perry (1-1) turned the ball over 13 times and had 28 rebounds. Johanna Diw fired in 11 points for Perry.

“This was a good win and a good way to go into the Thanksgiving break,” Sharp said after his team notched its first win of the season. The Cardinals have played three game at home to start the season.

Newton (1-2) has an opportunity to get back into practice mode. The Cardinals are idle until they open Little Hawkeye Conference play on Dec. 1 at Indianola.

The Newton junior varsity beat Perry 52-16 Tuesday for its first win. The Cardinals led 32-8 at halftime

Kameron Nehring paced the junior varsity with 15 points and three steals. Meg Callaghan had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Priscila Amador had two assists and two steals.
