No. 12 Lynnville-Sully rolls in season opener

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks began defense of their South Iowa Cedar League conference title with a convincing win over Iowa Valley on Friday night.

Opening the 2017-18 season ranked No. 12 in Class 1A, Lynnville-Sully’s girls rolled past the Tigers, 64-34.

The Hawks staked out to an 11-4 lead by the end of the first quarter. They were leading 32-19 at the break. Each team tallied 11 points in the third quarter. L-S put the finishing touches on the big win with a 21-4 fourth-quarter run.

“It was a good first game. The girls played very hard, and even if they were a little tired, they kept battling,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “I thought we rebounded the ball well, which leads up to being able to get out and run the floor for some easy baskets.”

Junior Carson Fisk led the Hawks with 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Senior Mariah Vos had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Lynnville-Sully shot 40 percent, 27-of-66, from the field and sank 7-of-14 free throw attempts.

“Our offense was OK in the half court but still, I think we could move the ball sharper,” Hulsing said.

The Hawk defense limited Iowa Valley to 25 percent shooting from the field. The Tigers were 15-of-58 from the field. They reached the free-throw line two times, hitting one. Iowa Valley had 20 turnovers.

Cherrise Ward had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers and Andrea Healey added 12 points.

The Hawks had 11 steals, led by junior Shiloh Cunningham with three. They had a 51-35 rebounding edge.

Senior Jataya Meyer pulled down nine rebounds and scored seven points. Senior Camryn Russell dished out four assists and tallied eight points. Sophomore Mallory Loftus tossed in six points and Cunningham had five points.

Lynnville-Sully (1-0) plays a non-conference game on Tuesday in Baxter.
