LHC volleyball honors go to 3 Cardinals

Perseverance pulled Newton High’s Cardinal volleyball team through a tough 2017 season.

The Cardinals went winless in Little Hawkeye Conference play, but led the conference in serving efficiency as a team. Newton was 413-of-439 serving in LHC matches for 94 percent and had 39 ace serves.

Three NHS players received all-conference honors from Little Hawkeye Conference coaches. With the loss of Pella in Tuesday’s first-round action of the Iowa Class 4A state volleyball tournament, the 2017 All-Little Hawkeye Conference volleyball teams were released.

Newton freshman setter Kate Callaghan earned All-LHC second-team honors. Senior hitters Audrey Lucas and Alexis Hoffman were awarded All-LHC honorable mention honors.

Little Hawkeye Conference champion Dallas Center-Grimes along with Indianola and Pella, which tied for second, had two players each on the first team. Pella Christian, Norwalk, Grinnell and Oskaloosa each had one player named to the first team. Newton did not have a first-team selection.

Dallas Center-Grimes (27-8) went 10-1 in conference matches while Indianola (29-10) and Pella (33-7) were 9-2. Taking fourth was Pella Christian (21-16) at 6-5 followed by Norwalk (14-25) at 4-7 and tied for sixth were Grinnell (9-23) and Oskaloosa (13-21) at 3-8 apiece.

Newton (3-25) went 0-11 in conference play to finish eighth.

Callaghan finished sixth on the LHC list of set assists with 167. She went 78-of-79, 98.7 percent, at the service line in conference matches, and had 11 ace serves. She had 55 digs and 30 kills. Callaghan had three solo blocks and three assisted blocks.

Lucas served at a 93.4 percent clip, 113-of-121, in conference matches for the Cardinals. She had 14 ace serves. Lucas delivered 46 kills at the net, three solo blocks and three assisted blocks and had 64 digs.

Newton finished tied for third in solo blocks with 20 as a team. Seven of those solo blocks were put up by Hoffman, which tied her for sixth in the LHC. She also had five assisted blocks. Hoffman was 13th in kills with 57, and had 37 digs. She went 66-of-71 at the service line with two ace serves for 93 percent.

Overall, Hoffman led the team with 18 solo blocks and 15 assisted blocks. She also was the team’s leading hitter with 118 kills. Hoffman had 60 digs. She finished third in serving, 154-of-172, for 89.5 percent and had 13 ace serves.

Lucas led Newton with 32 ace serves, going 206-of-219 at the service line for 94 percent. Lucas was second in kills with 91 and second in digs with 132. She had six solo blocks and five assisted blocks.

Callaghan averaged 4.39 set assists per set for Newton. She led the team with 312 set assists. She was the team leading server at 96.8 percent, 182-of-188, with 30 ace serves. She had 50 kills, five solo blocks and seven assisted blocks. Callaghan had 101 digs.
