The Newton Sanitary Landfill will launch a pilot program this winter and be open the first Saturday of each month.
The decision comes after landfill staff conducted a survey of 100 mixed use customers about the current Newton Sanitary Landfill winter schedule. A mix of customers from 28-E communities, rural residents, commercial haulers and contractors completed the survey. The majority of the respondents were in favor of the landfill being open one Saturday per month during the winter as it would be easiest for everyone to remember.
“The decision to be open the first Saturday of each month during the winter is part of our continued effort to provide a high level of customer service to customers,” said Jody Rhone, public works director.
Currently, the Newton Sanitary Landfill is closed Saturdays during the winter month. Under the new pilot program, the landfill will be open from 8 to 11:45 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month beginning Nov. 4.
An update on this pilot program, along with recommendations, will be provided at the Newton Sanitary Landfill 28-E annual budget meeting in January 2018.
