Baxter splits two against CAL, AGWSR

LATIMER — The Baxter volleyball team split two matches inside a gymnasium that was holding its final matches.

The Bolts defeated CAL in three sets in the school’s final season during Iowa Star Conference South Division play on Thursday. Baxter ended its night with a two-set loss to AGWSR.

CAL will close its middle school and high school after this season.

The 25-12, 25-15, 25-19 victory over the Cadets improves Baxter’s conference record to 6-1. The Bolts dropped below .500 after AGWSR claimed a 27-25, 25-21 non-conference win.

Senior Jordynn Wesselink tallied 16 kills and served up five aces in the win. She was 10-of-10 in serves.

Sophomore Amber Weltha collected seven kills, junior Sydney Schmidt tallied 19 assists and two aces and senior Lexi Ewing finished with seven digs and two aces.

Senior Mary Schabilion was 18-of-19 in serves with five aces. Ewing finished 14-of-15 in serves, Schmidt was 10-of-11 and sophomore Bekka Watt was 8-of-9 with two aces. The Bolts were 67-of-72 as a team with 16 aces.

The Bolts played both matches without the services of senior libero Sailor Hinegardner.

AGWSR (9-18) had seven aces and nine blocks in the win over Baxter.

Results from the AGWSR match were not available at press time.

CAL dropped to 1-23-2 overall and 0-8 in Iowa Star Conference play.

The Bolts (12-13) open Class 1A postseason play against Colo-NESCO at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Baxter.
