State qualifying cross country meets are set

Newton High’s Cardinal cross country teams were assigned to the Class 4A state qualifying meet hosted by Marshalltown on Oct. 19.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the 2017 combined cross country state qualifying meet assignments on Tuesday. All meets on Oct. 19 begin at 4 p.m. unless noted.

Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustang teams are in a Class 2A meet which begins at 3 p.m. in Pella. Baxter’s Bolts were assigned to a Class 1A meet at Mount Ayr while Lynnville-Sully and Colfax-Mingo will be in a Class 1A meet hosted by Pekin at Wildwood Park in Ottumwa.

Newton’s 4A qualifying meet has Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Des Moines Roosevelt, Fort Dodge, Linn-Mar, Marshalltown, Mason City and Urbandale.

Linn-Mar has its boys’ team ranked No. 8 and the girls’ team is ranked No. 9. The CR Kennedy boys are No. 9 and the DM Roosevelt girls are ranked No. 15.

At the 2A meet in Pella, features the top-ranked and No. 2 ranked Mid-Prairie girls and boys, respectively. PCM is also joined by Albia, Centerville, Davis County, Des Moines Christian, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Grundy Center, Interstate 35, Pella Christian, Pleasantville, Roland Story, Van Buren, West Marshall and Williamsburg.

The PCM girls are just outside the rankings in 2A. Grundy Center’s girls are ranked No. 14 and the Roland Story boys are 13th.

Baxter has three ranked boys’ teams and one ranked girls’ team in its Class 1A state qualifying meet at Mount Ayr. Nodaway Valley, which has the top-ranked boys’ team, Woodward Academy, which is boys only is ranked No. 9 and Earlham’s boys carry the No. 15th ranking. Panorama’s girls are ranked No. 6.

Other schools in the 1A state qualifier with Baxter are AHSTW, Audubon, Bedford, CAM, Central Decatur, Clarinda Academy, Diagonal, East Mills, East Union, Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton, Griswold, IKM-Manning, Iowa Christian, Lenox, Martensdale-St. Marys, Mount Ayr, Orient-Macksburg, Riverside, Southwest Valley, Stanton, Treynor, Wayne, West Central Valley and Woodward-Granger.

Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully are in the 1A qualifier hosted by Pekin. Other teams are BCLUW, Belle Plaine, BGM, Cardinal, Denver, Don Bosco, Dunkerton, English Valleys, GMG, HLV, Holy Trinity Catholic, Hudson, Kota, Melcher-Dallas, Meskwaki Settlement, Montezuma, Moravia, North Mahaska, North Tama, Sigourney, Southeast Warren, Twin Cedars, Valley Lutheran and WACO.

Denver has the top-ranked girls’ team and the No. 7 boys team. Hudson’s girls are No. 3 and the boys are No. 8. Pekin’s boys are ranked fifth and the girls are ranked sixth.

In each classifications, the first three teams and the first 15 individual place winners at each state qualifying meet will qualify for the state meet. The state championship meet is Oct. 28 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
