Tigerhawks fall to rival Sigourney

SIGOURNEY — Colfax-Mingo’s volleyball team got off to a slow start, recovered but couldn’t find enough consistency during a four-set loss to Sigourney during South Iowa Cedar League action on Monday night.

Tigerhawk senior Ries Wilson collected a double-double, but the visitors dropped two close sets at the start and the end of the match. Sigourney defeated Colfax-Mingo 25-23, 21-25, 25-14, 28-26.

Wilson finished with 19 kills, 16 digs and two aces. She was 18-of-20 from the service line.

Sigourney opened the match with a 5-0 lead in the opening set. Colfax-Mingo (9-12 overall, 3-5 in the SICL) rallied to lead 17-16, but the Savages (7-11, 3-5) regained an advantage and prevailed in a close game.

The Tigerhawks evened the match with a win in set two. Colfax-Mingo led 7-3 and then called timeout with a 13-11 advantage. The visiting team led 22-17 before closing out the game by four.

Things didn’t go well for the Tigerhawks in set three. Sigourney jumped out to another lead and never looked back.

Colfax-Mingo couldn’t force a fifth set. The Tigerhawks trailed 12-8, 19-12 and 21-18. They rallied to tie the score at 24-all before the Savages closed out the win with a 28-26 triumph.

Tigerhawk senior Megan Earles delivered 23 assists, collected five digs, grabbed eight digs and was 13-of-13 in serves. Freshman Chelsey Temple added three kills, seven digs, two aces and was 16-of-16 in serves.

Junior Chelsea Russell pitched in 19 digs, three aces and was 18-of-19 in serves. Junior Mac Brown tallied 27 digs. The Tigerhawks had 10 total aces.

Colfax-Mingo plays Keota in pool play of the SICL tournament at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Marengo. The winner of that match faces state-ranked Iowa Valley at 7 p.m.
