Threats force school district to cancel classes

JOHNSTON — A suburban Des Moines school district has canceled Tuesday’s classes after parents received text threats against children and the district staff.

The Johnston Community School District posted on its website that the anonymous threats were received around 8 p.m. Monday and that the cancellation was undertaken “in an effort of caution.” The district also says it’s working with the Johnston Police Department “to track down the validity of the message and its source.”

No arrests have been reported.

The closure affects about 7,200 students and 1,000 district employees in the sprawling district, which serves Johnston as well as parts of Des Moines, Granger, Grimes and Urbandale.
