Newton, PCM learn regional pairings

Newton High’s Cardinals and the Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustangs will be road warriors in their quest for state tournament volleyball action. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the 2017 Class 4A and Class 3A volleyball regional tournament pairings Tuesday.

Newton is in the Class 4A Region 4 bracket. PCM plays in the Class 3A Region 6 tournament.

Regional play for 4A and 3A begins on Oct.18 with the second-round matches on Oct. 24 and regional championship matches on Oct. 30. Regional champions advance to the state tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids from November 7-10.

The Cardinals’ 4A Region 4 bracket includes two other Little Hawkeye Conference teams, Oskaloosa and second-ranked Pella. Those two teams are in the top half of the bracket. Oskaloosa plays Knoxville in the opening round with the winner playing at Pella on Oct. 24.

Newton opens Region 4 play at Carlisle. The Cardinals take on the Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18.

The winner of the Newton versus Carlisle match advances to the semifinal at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 against Bondurant-Farrar in Bondurant. The 4A Region 4 championship match is st for 7 p.m. on Oct 30 at the highest-ranked team remaining in play.

For the PCM Mustangs, their journey begins in Class 3A Region 6 at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 against West Marshall at State Center. Nevada plays 3A No. 14 Iowa Falls-Alden in the opening round.

The winners of those two matches play in a semifinal match on Oct. 24 at Iowa Falls. The 3A Region 6 championship match is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 30 hosted by South Tama at Tama.

Top-seeded in the 3A Region 6 bracket is fourth-ranked Mount Vernon which hosts Vinton-Shellsburg in a first-round match. The winner plays the winner of Benton and South Tama on Oct. 24 in a semifinal at Mount Vernon. The semifinal winner advances to the championship match.
