Area 1A, 2A volleyball teams learn regional pairings

No opening-round byes for the area’s Class 2A and Class 1A volleyball teams in regional action. Baxter’s Bolts and Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks do host first-round matches in 1A regional play. Colfax-Mingo on the road in Class 2A.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released regional volleyball pairings for 1A and 2A on Monday. Regional pairings for Class 3A, 4A and 5A will be released Tuesday by the IGHSAU.

Regional play begins Oct. 17 in 1A and 2A with the finals set for Oct. 31. Regional champions advance to the state tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids from November 7-10.

Baxter is in the Class 1A Region 3 bracket, which is headlined by top-ranked and 1A defending champion Janesville and No. 11 Bishop Garrigan. Baxter hosts Colo-NESCO at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17.

A win puts the Bolts against GMG on Oct. 23 and the winner of that match would more than likely face Janesville. Gladbrook-Reinbeck plays AGWSR in the first round with the winner taking on Janesville.

In the top half of the Region 3 bracket, West Bend-Mallard plays GTRA, Newell-Fonda plays Paton-Churdan, Ar-We-Va plays Storm Lake St. Mary’s in first-round action. The winner of West Bend-Mallard versus GTRA plays at Bishop Garrigan on Oct. 23.

Janesville and Bishop Garrigan are scheduled to host Region 3 semifinal machos on Oct. 26. The 1A Region 3 championship match is Oct. 31 at Clear Lake.

Lynnville-Sully opens Class 1A Region 4 play at home at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17 against Collins-Maxwell. The winner of the match plays at No. 8 North Tama on Oct. 23.

Also in the Hawks’ side of the regional bracket, Montezuma plays North Mahaska, Melcher-Dallas plays Grand View Christian in opening-round matches. The winners play each other at Montezuma on Oct. 23.

CAM got a first-round bye in Region 4 on the bottom side of the bracket. It will host the winner of Ankeny Christian and Orient-Macksburg on Oct. 23. Other first-round matches are Coon Rapids-Bayard playing Glidden-Ralston and Audubon playing Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton. The winners play on Oct 23 in quarterfinals.

The 1A Region 4 semifinals are Oct. 26 at Coon Rapids and Traer. The Oct. 31 regional championship match site has not been set yet.

In Class 2A Region 5, Colfax-Mingo plays at Pella Christian at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 in Pella. The winner faces 2A 15th-ranked Van Meter on Oct. 23 in Van Meter.

Also in the Tigerhawks’ side of the regional bracket, Sigourney plays Cardinal in the opening round. The winner plays at Pekin on Oct. 23 in quarterfinal action. Pella Christian is slated to host a regional semifinal on Oct. 26.

The top half of the 2A Region 5 bracket has No. 3 Grundy Center awaiting the winner of an opening-round march between Hudson and Aplington-Parkersburg on Oct. 23. Belle Plaine is set to play the winner of BCLUW and East Marshall on Oct. 23. Grundy Center will host a semifinal match on Oct. 26.

The Class 2A Region 5 championship match will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 31 at Grinnell.
