Representing the Newton High 1977 Class 4A state-runner up football team at Friday’s NHS home football game were these 17 men. The 1977 team was honored on the 40th anniversary of its 9-3 season, which ended at the UNI Dome with a 21-14 defeat at the hands of Davenport West in the Class 4A state championship game. The 1977 Cardinals still hold the school record for fewest points, 96, given up by a Newton team in a 12-game season.
