Bolts, Tigerhawks combine for one win at Madrid tournament

MADRID — Baxter and Colfax-Mingo both took part in the Madrid volleyball tournament on Saturday.

The Bolts and Tigerhawks were in separate pools but only Baxter came home with a victory. The two area schools finished 1-5 on the night. Neither team advanced past pool play.

Baxter opened the tournament with a two-set win over Ankeny Christian but finished with back-to-back two-set losses to Class 3A West Marshall and 2A No. 15 Van Meter.

Colfax-Mingo opened the tournament with a three-set loss to 4A Webster City and then was swept by host Madrid and Collins-Maxwell.

In Baxter’s 21-9, 21-9 win over Ankeny Christian (8-13), senior Jordynn Wesselink finished with seven kills and four digs, junior Sydney Schmidt had 10 assists, three kills and two aces and sophomore Amber Weltha tallied five kills.

Seniors Sailor Hinegardner and Lexi Ewing and freshman Sophie Meyer all had four digs and senior Mary Schabilion served up three aces.

Baxter (9-8) lost to tournament runner-up West Marshall (22-9) 21-16, 21-7.

Hinegardner finished with nine digs, Wesselink tallied five kills and four digs and Weltha put away four kills. Schmidt dished out 11 assists and totaled four digs.

Tournament champion Van Meter (16-4) downed the Bolts 21-8, 21-10.

Wesselink had three kills and eight digs, Schmidt finished with three assists and Hinegardner totaled five digs and was 5-of-5 in serves.

Webster City (5-22) downed the Tigerhawks (8-10) 17-21, 21-13, 15-13. Leading Colfax-Mingo was senior Ries Wilson, who finished with eight kills, 14 digs and two aces.

Senior Megan Earles tallied 15 assists and 11 digs and was 13-for-13 in serves, junior Colbee Cunningham totaled six kills, six digs and two aces.

The Tigerhawks had eight kills in the 21-11, 21-12 loss to Madrid (10-12).

Wilson had seven of those kills and added seven digs and two aces. Earles finished with seven assists and six digs and Cunningham totaled six digs.

Collins-Maxwell (15-3) handed the Tigerhawks a 21-15, 21-13 loss in the pool play finale.

Cunningham had a team-high six kills, Wilson finished with five kills and four digs and Earles added nine assists, three digs and three digs. Junior Chelsea Russell totaled four digs.

Colfax-Mingo plays English Valleys at 7 p.m. Monday in North English.

Baxter plays Collins-Maxwell at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Maxwell.
