Celebrating 10 years

Over the weekend my husband and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. We didn’t do anything flashy and spent the night with our kiddos eating pizza and watching the new Wonder Woman movie.

We do have a fun story about how we met, 15 years ago. I was on a blind date with a guy a couple of years older than me. Because I didn’t really know the guy and he wasn’t from my school, I brought along my best friend and he did the same.

Enter my future husband. We went to see one of the Austin Powers movies on the date and after it was finished, I spent most of my time talking to my date’s best friend. We had been to a mutual event together without knowing it and also just seemed to be drawn together, much to the dismay of my date.

After talking in the parking lot for about an hour, we decided to part ways. It wasn’t until a couple of weeks later that we started talking again through MSN messenger or some other extremely outdated predecessor to social media.

The weeks to come were filled with mushy emails, late night phone calls and the beginning of our relationship. Not long after our first meeting, my future husband left for college a couple of states away, so we didn’t have the opportunity to see each other and Skype and Facetime were future ideas yet to be realized.

When the distance didn’t work out for many reasons, he moved back to the area just about the same time I headed off to college. Thanks to the space between us, we talked a lot more than we saw each other and built a foundation of communication that has served us well in the years to come.

College meant a lot of miles traveled back and forth from Iowa City and culminated in an engagement at the end of my junior year and a wedding following graduation. Our wedding was everything I could have hoped for, save the photos, which were never printed out and live with the photographer.

My mom and I worked tirelessly on every detail, each with our expertise, and pulled off a handmade, formal affair enjoyed by my favorite 300 people, give or take a few. Our honeymoon was spent in Boston and Cape Cod, an area neither of us had been and have since returned with it being one of our favorite vacation destinations.

In the ten years of our marriage we have lived in three houses in two towns, welcomed home two beautiful little girls, been entertained and frustrated with our giant dog, had two cats, kind of, and a fish that lived way longer than I ever expected. We have traveled across the country as a couple and are beginning a tradition of family vacations to enjoy with the girlies.

I couldn’t have been blessed with a better guy to go through life with, he gets me in every way, even my crazy. He knows how to push my buttons, when to be there and when to give me space, makes me laugh until I hurt, takes part in some of my out-there plans, puts up with my crafting and sewing business taking over our house and is the best dad the girls could have asked for.

While ten years is a long time and, as a person, I feel like I have grown leaps and bounds since we said “I do,” I can’t wait to see where the rest of our days take us. We have so many plans and ideas and are typically not that patient when it comes to getting underway.

So happy anniversary to my husband. To end on an over-used quote, “the best is yet to come.”
