PLEASANT HILL — In their final competition before taking to the Class 4A district links, Newton High’s Cardinal boys played against some of the top 4A golf teams in the state at Wednesday’s Southeast Polk Invitational.
The Cardinals competed in their second and final fall invitational at Cooper Creek Golf Course. Four of the top 10 ranked teams were on the course with the Cardinals.
Top-ranked Marshalltown was led by No. 1 ranked Cole Davis to a five stroke win over seventh-ranked Waukee, 295-300. Davis shot a 69 to win the individual title.
Third-ranked Valley was third with a 306 followed by fifth-ranked Dowling Catholic at 310.
Newton’s golfers combined for a 373, finishing 10th.
Senior Shaiden Simmons carded an 88 on rounds of 45 and 43 to lead the Cardinals. Damon Reynolds, a sophomore, shot a 93 (48-45) followed by junior Colin McAnally with a 95 (49-46), and senior Nate Vanzee had a 97 (52-45).
Sophomore Nate Keith shot a 101 (53-48) and junior Devon Young had a 124 (65-59).
Newton is in the 4A district with Valley, Waukee, eighth-ranked Ames, Indianola, Mason City, Southeast Polk, Urbandale, Des Moines Lincoln, Des Moines East, Des Moines Hoover, Des Moines North and Des Moines Roosevelt. Ames is hosting the tournament starting at 10 a.m. on Oct. 3 at Veenkier Golf Course.
