Cardinal golf tees off

MARSHALLTOWN — Newton High’s boys played their first Class 4A fall golf tournament Friday. They finished 10th out of 12 teams at the Marshalltown Invitational at the Elmwood Country Club golf course.

Junior Colin McAnally led the Cardinals with a 92 as the Cardinals combined for a 386 score. Class 4A top-ranked Marshalltown claimed the tournament championship with a 288 team score. The Bobcats featured four of the top eight ranked golfers in 4A.

Ames, ranked No. 8 in 4A, was second with a 308. Class 4A No. 12 Indianola finished third with a 311.

Newton senior Nate Vanzee shot a 94 for the tournament and sophomore Damon Reynolds carded a 98. Senior Shaiden Simmons finished with a 102. Junior Devon Young and senior Michael Hodnett were the non-team scoring players for Newton with scores of 113 and 136, respectively.

“I knew we would go through some growing pains having so many kids with little varsity experience,” Newton head coach Pat Riley said. “Shaiden and Damon are the only two who have had some varsity meets under their belts. We just need to focus on improving week to week on all aspects of the game.”

The Cardinals play one more invitational this fall — the Southeast Polk Invitational at 9 a.m. on Wednesday at Copper Creek Golf Course in Pleasant Hill. They play in 4A regional action on Oct. 3.
