Tigerhawks win SICL opener

NEW SHARON — Colfax-Mingo’s only two seniors had their hands on just about every play in the Tigerhawks’ four-set volleyball win over North Mahaska on Thursday night.

Ries Wilson finished with a triple-double and Megan Earles had a double-double as the Tigerhawks downed the Warhawks 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 25-21 during the South Iowa Cedar League opener for both teams.

Wilson’s monster effort included 22 digs, 18 digs and 11 aces, while Earles added 32 assists and 15 digs.

“Ries was as advertised tonight,” Colfax-Mingo coach Michelle Grant said. “Megan did a great job of distributing the ball.”

The Tigerhawks rallied in the first set to win by two. North Mahaska led 17-10 and then 21-16 before Colfax-Mingo scored nine of the next 11 points to go up in the match.

Colfax-Mingo dominated set two to go up 2-0.

After North Mahaska got on the board with a third-set win, the Warhawks led 11-9 in the third set before the Tigerhawks rallied again.

Junior Mac Brown finished with seven kills and 10 digs, junior Colbee Cunningham had eight kills and junior Chelsea Russell added 20 digs.

Freshman Kira Warrick collected 13 digs and freshman Chelsey Temple had two kills and two blocks.

The Tigerhawks are off until hosting their tournament at 9 a.m. on Sept. 9 in Colfax.
