Newton Police Department
• Danny L. Shaffer, 57, Knoxville was arrested at 9:34 p.m. Aug. 21 on four Marion County warrants. Three warrants were for failure to appear, original charges, two counts of violation of a no contact order, third-degree criminal mischief and eluding. The fourth warrant was for third-degree harassment. Shaffer was transported to Monroe, where he was transferred to Marion County.
• Logan J. Owens, 18, was arrested on four Jasper County warrants at 4:41 a.m. Aug. 23 on three warrants for failure to appear, original charges possession of drug paraphernalia, consumption of alcohol in public place, interference with official acts and possession/purchase alcohol by person 18/19/20. The fourth warrant was for violation of pre-trial release, original charge, fourth-degree burglary. Owens was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Jeffrey L. Stewart, 34, of Newton, was arrested at 2:23 a.m. Aug. 28 at 407 E. 21st St. S. on a Jasper County warrant for failure to appear, original charge, simple assault. Stewart was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Alex H. Wolf, 25, of Newton, was charged with operating while under the influence at 9:21 p.m. Aug. 22 after police were called to a vehicle in a ditch. The vehicle was on Interstate 80 mile marker 164 at an off ramp. The vehicle reportedly lost control and ended up in the ditch. Wolf told police he lost control of his vehicle due to a semi truck not allowing him to exit at the 164 mile marker. Wolf fell down while walking to retrieve paper work. Wolf was slurring his words and smelled of alcohol. Wolf denied having anything to drink. Wolf failed a field sobriety test. Police found two half full vodka bottles in the trunk of the vehicle. Wolf was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Brandon L. James, 30, of Newton, was charged with eluding-speeding and interference with official acts at 10:24 p.m. Aug. 22 after police pulled over a red Honda motorcycle traveling eastbound on North 13th Avenue East at the intersection of East 19th Street North. The driver failed to stop at the intersection completely. The motorcycle didn’t have a license plate on the back of it. James turned southbound on East 19th Street North and proceeded to accelerate quickly and entered the oncoming lane of traffic. Police turned their lights on and the motorcycle accelerated, didn’t stop at stop signs and traveled more than 100 mph on North 11th Avenue East where he eventually stopped when he killed the motorcycle. James resisted arrest, and he was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Jasmine D. Oldeburger, 21, of Newton, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia at 4:40 p.m. Aug. 23 after police were called to 210-108 E. 28th St. N. for a smell of marijuana. Oldeburger told police she had been smoking marijuana earlier in the day. She agreed to give the officers paraphernalia, which included two grinders, several pipes and a small amount of marijuana. Oldeburger was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Alyssa M. Bright, 26, homeless, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct and Kristen J. Cleverly, 36, of Prairie City, was charged with disorderly conduct at 6:17 p.m. Aug. 23 after police were called to Casey’s on First Avenue East for two females fighting. Bright and Cleverly had conflicting stories about who started the fight. Bright freely told police she had a bong, a pipe and needles in her backpack. Both Bright and Cleverly were arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
