United Way of Jasper County mixes things up with campaign kickoff concert

The kickoff for the annual United Way of Jasper County campaign will look a little different from years’ past. The 2018 campaign will get a rockin’ start with a free community concert.

The concert, with music from Grinnell-based band Time Will Tell, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Newton DMACC/Maytag Innovation Center courtyard.

“The standard kickoff for many years has been a luncheon where representatives from businesses and organizations come to pick up campaign materials, eat and listen to a presentation,” said Jessica Lowe, UWJC Executive Director. “I really wanted to mix it up, make it more fun and do something to let the Jasper County community as a whole know the campaign was starting.”

The 2018 campaign will run from Aug. 26 through Nov. 17, with a goal of $330,000. The money raised will be granted to area non-profits who provide health and human service programs to Jasper County residents. The allocation process will begin in October when application materials are available to nonprofits.

“I think there is still some people who don’t realize the impact United Way dollars have on the community,” Lowe said. “On average, 12,000 Jasper County citizens are served by programs funded in part or in whole by United Way. The money raised local stays local to serve those who need some help.”

The campaign kickoff is a first of its kind for Jasper County. Along with music, those attending will have an opportunity to learn about partner agencies supported by United Way and make a donation if they choose. Hy-Vee of Newton will be on hand selling food and adult beverages. The group Fairy Godmothers will host a lemonade stand and sell fresh-squeezed lemonade, pop and water with all proceeds supporting the local United Way.

“I will share a little bit about United Way and there will be opportunities for people to make a donation but what I really hope happens is people come and enjoy themselves and listen to some great music and realize United Way is serving the community in many different ways,” said Lowe, who became the director in September 2014.

The event is open to all ages and those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair to enjoy the music in the courtyard. Full details can be found on the United Way of Jasper County’s Facebook page.

“The DMACC courtyard is a beautiful space and I think people will really enjoy a night of community and music,” said Ange Sevenbergen, UWJC Board Member. “As a volunteer and supporter of United Way, I hope the changes to the kickoff will shine a light on United Way and get people interested in learning more about what this great organization does for thousands of people every year.”
