Marie M. Redding

Marie M. Redding, the daughter of Teunis and Johanna (Van Vliet) Hartgers, was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Sully. Marie was united in marriage with Virgil Redding March 18, 1938, in Sully. Marie dedicated her life to her husband and family. Marie had worked outside the home at the Kellogg Locker, Vogel’s Egg Hatchery and had an in home laundry business for many years. Marie was a very active member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church until it closed and her membership was transferred to St. Andrews Lutheran Church in rural Sully.

Marie died Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Nelson Manor in Newton. She was 96 years old. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; and her son, Francis; three brothers, Tunis Hartgers, John Hartgers, Leonard Hartgers; and three sisters, Minnie (Hartgers) Jensma, Lena (Hartgers) Gregory, Elizabeth (Hartgers) Miller.

Those left to honor Marie’s memory include her husband of 79 years, Virgil Redding of Newton; daughters, Joan (Gary) Olson of Grinnell and Carol (Carl) Pickett of Ankeny; her daughter-in-law, Connie Skates of Kellogg; her grandchildren, Roger Redding, Russell Redding, Billy Olson, Tami Ditzler, Jim (Becky) Sampson and Angela Pickett; her seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

A celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newton. Friends may greet the family from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until service time at the church. Memorials may be designated to St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church or the Kellogg Historical Society and may be left at the church or at Pence-Reese Funeral Home.
