Newton Police


• Dominic Torkel Vasquez, 36, of Newton, was arrested at 8:06 p.m. July 25 in the 1000 block of North Fifth Avenue East on a warrant for failure to appear on a driving while revoked. Vasquez was also cited for fraudulent use of registration. Vasquez was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Sherri S. Smith, 49, of Newton, was arrested at 1:11 a.m. July 26 at 405 First Ave. E. on two warrants. One for probation violation for possession of controlled substance and one for parole violation, original charge operating vehicle with no consent. Smith was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Rodney M. Savage, 31, of Newton, was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, operating while under the influence, interference with official acts and driving while license denied at 6:59 p.m. July 24 after police were called to East 17th Street South for a man who was driving slowly and hitting objects. Police identified the man as Savage as he was driving north in the 300 block of East 19th Street South. After pulling into a driveway, Savage tried to run to the back of the house after exiting the vehicle. Savage smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and wild mood swings. Savage refused all sobriety maneuvers. Savage refused to walk, and he attempted to cause damage to the police vehicle by slamming his body into it. Savage refused to stop, his feet were restrained while transported to the Jasper County Jail. Savage is also accused of cutting a court ordered electronic tracking device from a woman’s ankle using a pair of scissors while intoxicated at a residence on East Eighth Street North.

• Dustin J. Cooper, 36, of Newton, was charged with third-degree theft at 3 p.m. July 3 after a man, identified as Cooper, was photographed loading several rolls of chain link fence into a dark green Ford Ranger at a residence on South Second Avenue West. The victim reported it to police. Cooper was arrested July 19 on a warrant. Cooper was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
