NCSD to consider several fundraising requests during its regular meeting on Monday night

With summer in full swing the Newton Community School District Board of Education will have a light agenda to focus on during their meeting Monday. The regular meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the E.J. H. Beard Administration Center, 1302 First Ave. W., will be a chance for the board to get ready to start the 2017-18 school year in Newton.

Board members will consider a request for several fundraising activities, including allowing the Newton High School chapter of DECA to purchase T-shirts and superfan apparel to sell throughout the school year.

DECA is a nationwide organization with chapters around the country. The program’s goal is to help high school and college students that are focused on careers in marketing, entrepreneurship and management. Students in Newton’s DECA chapter hope to generate several thousand dollars from the sales of T-shirts and superfan merchandise.

DECA sponsor Karla Cazett, the faculty advisor for the Newton chapter, wrote in her request that the money raised from the sale will be used to purchase DECA memberships for students and to defray the expenses associated with attendance at nationwide DECA conferences for Newton High School students.

The school board will also consider a fundraising request from the Newton High School cheerleaders. Coach Heather Ross wrote that the cheerleaders are planning to have a car wash on July 30th to raise money to offset competition fees for Newton cheerleaders. The team plans to charge $5 per car, and they hope to raise $300 or more.
