Monday brings zoo animals and star gazing to the library

Blank Park Zoo Animal
Show and Tell

10:30 a.m. Monday — Join an educator from the Blank Park Zoo to learn about the amazing ways animals build. From underground burrows to nests high in the trees, we’ll talk about the different dwellings animals can create. Children will also get to meet several small zoo animals. This event will take place on the library lawn, weather permitting.

Stargaze at the Library

8 p.m. Monday — Join us after-hours as the Des Moines Astronomical Society leads a night sky viewing. Learn how to spot constellations and planets while viewing the night sky through a high powered telescope. This presentation will also discuss the upcoming total solar eclipse. Children are welcome to attend with an adult. Please call 641-792-4108 to register.

Friday Flicks

1 p.m. July 28 — Join us on Friday afternoons for a family-friendly movie in the library meeting room. Bring your own popcorn, beverages are provided. Seating is on the floor, and attendees may bring a pillow if they like. All movies have a G or PG rating. Library policy is that children age 10 and under must have an adult guardian present in the building. The movie for July 28 is "Pocahontas," 81 minutes.

Understanding the Opioid Epidemic in Iowa

6 p.m. July 31 — Hayley Nemmers from Employee and Family Resources offers an inside look at the nation’s opioid epidemic. This informative program will discuss current drug trends, signs of abuse, and prevention efforts in your own community. Contact the library at 641-792-4108 with questions.

The Life and Times of
Laura Ingalls Wilder

6 p.m. Aug. 3 — Humanities Iowa Speaker and historical interpreter, Sarah Uthoff, presents a program on famous author and pioneer, Laura Ingalls Wilder. Attendees are invited to dress in period costume and bring their questions about Wilder and pioneer life. All ages are welcome at this free event. For more information, call 641-792-4108.

Painted Garden Stones

6 p.m. Aug. 9 — Paint your own decorative garden stones. Lisa Frasier demonstrates tips and techniques for painting unique designs on stone. All materials provided, adults only. Call 641-792-4108 to register.

6 p.m. Aug. 10 — Relax and unwind with a coloring book. All materials provided, adults only please.
